These writers have been provided with bespoke mentorship, resources, script development sessions, showreels, writers room experience with Tiger Aspect, opportunities to pitch their work to leaders within the world of T.V. and theatre, and a Showcase of their work to industry giants at Fremantle, London.

MEET THE WRITERS

Alice Lazar is a writer and filmmaker from south London who has worked in the industry for five years. In her writing she uses dark comedy to navigate her way through topical female led stories and has a keen interest in exploring the social repercussions of income inequality.

Alice’s inspiration comes from the last thing she watched that made her truly forget herself yet learnt something new about her world, she’s determined to tell such stories herself.

“I started writing as part of SalFunni 2018, the inaugural cohort of students from the University of Salford to write and perform sketches and comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe. My play ‘Sunny Girl’ is funded by Arts Council and is being developed with HER Productions. My second play ‘Awareness’ was part of Unity Theatre’s Open Call Program, and this year was part of Traverse Theatre’s Breakthrough Writers program in association with Lung Ha Theatre Company.

My training includes The Writing Squad, the Royal Court Introduction to Playwriting, the Young Everyman Playhouse Writers, Royal Court Liverpool Stage Write, Writing on the Wall, Theatre 503’s Advanced Playwriting, BBC Writersroom’s Write Across Liverpool, Box of Trick’s Pen Pals programme, The Space’s Script Space, DANC’s HETV Training with Ralph and Katie, and Wild Child’s Write Wild. With Wild Child and Tiger Aspect, I also had the opportunity to shadow the Bad Education writers room last summer, and I am keen to get more writers room experience.

This year, I was selected to be a part of Art Emergency’s inaugural 10 week coaching program, where I worked with Katie Sinclair to improve my knowledge of Writers Rooms by meeting with various industry professionals. I also had the opportunity to speak at RTS North West’s Story Conference this Summer.

I have been longlisted for a Funny Women Writing Award 2019, was a finalist for Hope Mill’s Through the Mill Prize in 2021, was shortlisted for the 2021 Women’s Prize for Playwriting, was in the top 35 scripts for the Bruntwood Prize 2022, and won a Cheshire Prize for Literature in 2022. I am passionate about improving the representation of Neurodivergence and Disability onscreen. I was featured in The Stage with the Neurodivergent Creatives Network, an online support network I co- founded. I am drawn to female-led stories with a sense of humour, even in the darkest moments - because I believe life is funny. I am currently looking for writers room experience, and my ideal career would be writing for stage and screen (and at least one episode of Doctor Who!)”

Gail Egbeson is a black british writer who thrives in comedy. Since writing her first play in 2019, the inspiration of her work stems from finding experimental approaches to the concept of right and wrong in our modern day lives. Gail is also an alumnus of the Mercury playwright
program.

"I’ve always had a passion for writing, whether that be through music, film or television and i've loved the WriteWild 2022/23 Scheme! I mainly write comedy scripts as I feel that comedy is a great way to really champion unheard voices on-screen as it’s so enjoyable and easy to watch, and I’d love to be able to bring light to people; especially given the fact that we live in such uncertain times, I believe that comedy is a welcome relief to everyone.

Also as a queer, disabled woman, writing complex and authentic characters is something that is always at the heart of everything that I create. My writing style is quite realistic and observational as I love listening to the way people interact with each-other and I always like to make a note of funny things that people say to put into scripts."

Sebastian Rex is a writer and director, with over a dozen works produced nationally and internationally, nominated for three OffWestEnd Awards (Offies) and published with PlayDeadPress and OffTheWall.

With a distinctly unique writing style, Sebastian writes socio-political comedies, exploring the queer, the weird and the wonderful (AKA the queerderful!), creating truly inclusive works. Supported by the Peggy Ramsay Foundation, Sebastian has been described by former Times critic Jeremy Kingston as "a writer with important messages to convey and with the skill and imagination to do this so vividly that the images created stay long in the mind.” And as “innovative” in a review by Ham&High for 2010 play Spare, which was written entirely in gender-neutral language, a writing-style that Sebastian has since been developing. Sebastian's unique identity as a hyper-organised, emotionally-disordered, queer, double-immigrant informs their voice and subject matter.

Apart from writing and directing, Sebastian works as a choreographer, dramaturg and translator, and runs The Literal Challenge, a social enterprise/worldwide community designed at encouraging writing for all levels, which has seen over 5,000 participants from 100 countries worldwide, and was recently a finalist for the ISA Pitch Competition 2023, and short listed for The Pitch Film Fund 2024, with a chance to win 30k to produce their short film.

Writer, director, musician, and fine artist, Yvonne Shelling is engaged with the investigation of perception and identity within society and in art. Hailing from Walworth in South London, Yvonne's writing style is both reflective and inquisitive. Always concerned with the what if's he is dedicated to putting Black characters into positions that the average viewer would never expect to see them.

Always intent on subverting expectations while maintaining emotional vulnerability, Yvonne takes a lot of inspiration from the likes of Jordan Peele, Banana Yoshimoto, Jesse Armstrong, Debbie Tucker Green and Zadie Smith. Having previously been longlisted for the BBC Writersroom and shortlisted for the BFI Film Fund, Yvonne is hoping to take his career to the next level.
